2011 REVISED   AED & Medical Gases (O2 & N2O2) Administration Competent User
     
Course overview:   This combined course will train & certificate persons in the correct use of AED's in accordance
    with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines. It is suitable for anyone who has access to
  an AED & may respond to a cardiac arrest situation. It also provides necessary knowledge &
  skills to enable the safe administration of oxygen & nitrous oxide (Entonox) by emergency
  medical service & rescue personnel, & authorised first aiders, as part of their first aid role.
   
Validation: 1 year. Lifeskills Medical award. MTA approved. Resuscitation Council (UK) recognised.
     
Course length:   1 day. Course held at Lifeskills Medical EMS Training Centre Stafford, or on client's premises
  subject to suitable training facilities being available.
     
Requirements:   You must be able to show evidence of training to a minimum of Emergency Medical Technician
  (or equivalent standard).
     
Course includes:   Basic life support, basic airway management, chain of survival, requirements of an AED
  programme, protocols & procedures, AED safety precautions, reporting resuscitation attempts,
  O2 & N2O2 equipment checks & assembly, O2 & N2O2 administration procedures & delivery
  systems, risk assessment, hazards precautions & contra indications when using O2 & N2O2,
  using manual & automatic aspirators, administration & Patient Record Form procedures.
     
     
2010 REVISED   Emergency Medical Technician
     
Course overview:   This course provides increased knowledge & skills in the assessment & management of
    medical & trauma emergencies in the pre-hospital environment, using techniques & equipment
  beyond the scope of basic first aid. It is suitable for personnel with responsibility for managing
    pre-hospital trauma patients e.g. independent emergency medical services, rescue teams, &
    ambulance staff who wish to extend their basic skills.
   
Validation: 2 years. Lifeskills Medical award. EIHS Approved. MTA approved. This course is accepted by
  IHCD as being appropriate clinical skills & knowledge to instruct on the IHCD First Person On
  Scene (FPOS) basic and intermediate course for those who hold an appropriate teaching
  qualification,
   
 
Course length:   5 days. Course held at Lifeskills Medical EMS Training Centre Stafford, or on client's premises
  subject to suitable training facilities being available.
   
 
Requirements:   You must be able to show evidence of first aid training undertaken (First Aid at Work or
  equivalent standard).
     
Course includes:   Mechanism of injury, airway management, oxygen & entonox administration, primary &
  secondary patient assessment, vital signs monitoring, 3 lead ECG monitoring, blood glucose
  testing, head, spine, chest, abdominal & limb trauma, shock (evaluation and progression),
  AED protocols, application of splints, spinal immobilisation (long boards, orthopaedic scoop
  stretchers, KED's, & head blocks). Medical emergencies management for asthma, angina,
  diabetes & seizures. Basic emergency medications, CVA's, anaphylaxis, triage systems, burns
  management, pregnant patient management, trauma management, assisting with intra-
    venous fluids.
 
     
  First Person On Scene (FPOS) Intermediate, BTEC Level 2 IHCD (Edexcel)
   
Course overview: This course is designed to give increased knowledge & skills to those involved in pre-hospital
  care to help enable them to manage the ill or injured casualty within the first few minutes until
  handover to a medical service. The qualification has been developed with the NHS Ambulance
  services and is clinically endorsed by the Faculty of Pre-hospital Care. FPOS also meets the
  Security Industry Authority first aid requirements for close protection.
   
Validation: 3 years. Level 2 BTEC award IHCD (Edexcel).
   
Course length: 5 days. Course held at Lifeskills Medical EMS Training Centre Stafford, or on client's premises
  subject to suitable training facilities being available.
   
Requirements: You must be able to show, as a minimum, evidence of first aid training undertaken (First Aid
  at Work or equivalent standard).
   
Course includes: Pre-hospital environment, scene management, patient assessment, primary survey, safe
  moving & handling, respiration & airway management, oro-pharyngeal airways, O2
  supplementation, basic life support, defibrillation, heart rhythms, circulation & shock, medical
  & trauma related emergencies.
   
   
  Immediate Life Support (ILS)
   
Course overview: This course provides increased knowledge & skills in the assessment & management of basic
  life support, airway management & safe defibrillation. Designed to train emergency healthcare
  personnel as members of the cardiac arrest team. It is also suitable for personnel required to
  manage patients in cardiac arrest until the arrival of trauma trained personnel.
   
Validation: 1 year. Resuscitation Council (UK) award.
   
Course length: 1 day. Course held at Lifeskills Medical EMS Training Centre Stafford, or on client's premises
  subject to suitable training facilities being available.
   
Requirements: You must be able to show, as a minimum, evidence of first aid training undertaken (First Aid
  at Work or equivalent standard).
   
Course includes: Causes & prevention of cardiorespiratory arrest, ABCDE approach, CASDemo, the ALS
  algorithm, initial resuscitation & defibrillation, airway management, ventilation
  techniques, drug delivery, cardiac arrest in special circumstances, CASTeach,
  DNAR orders, audit, equipment.
   
   
  Basic Life Support Paediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals (BLS - PEPP)
   
Course overview: This course, (adapted for UK protocols), is designed to give pre-hospital providers the
  education, skills, & confidence they need to effectively treat pediatric patients. Developed by
  the American Academy of Paediatrics, the course provides a comprehensive source of pre-
  hospital medical information for the emergent care of infants & children. The course teaches
  pre-hospital professionals how to better assess & manage ill or injured children by
  determining how sick is this child?, how quickly do I need to act?, what is this child's
  physiological problem? This is a comprehensive, innovative, & highly visual course with case-
  based lectures, live action video, hands-on skills stations, & small group scenarios.
   
Validation: 2 years. American Academy of Paediatrics. MTA approved. Resuscitation Council (UK)
  recognised.
   
Course length: 2 days. Course held at Lifeskills Medical EMS Training Centre Stafford, or on client's premises
  subject to suitable training facilities being available.
   
Requirements: None.
   
Course includes: Paediatric assessment, child development, airway procedures, spinal stabilization, child &
      family interaction, children with special health care needs, trauma, child maltreatment,
      respiratory emergencies, emergency delivery & newborn stabilization,
      cardiovascular emergencies, medical emergencies, scenario skill practice.
       
   
  Offshore First Aid (OFAR) HSE Approved
       
  Course overview:   This course complies with the Offshore Installations & Pipeline Works (First Aid) Regulations
  1989. Offshore personnel are trained to a standard where they can administer basic First Aid
  on their own & provide assistance to the Offshore Medic when necessary.
   
Validation: 3 years. Lifeskills Medical award Health & Safety Executive approved. MTA approved,
  Resuscitation Council (UK) recognised.
   
Course length: 4 days. Course held at Lifeskills Medical EMS Training Centre Stafford, or on client's premises
      subject to suitable training facilities being available.
       
Requirements: None.
       
  Course includes:   Basic life support, CPR, AED's, use & maintenance of manual resuscitators, manual suction
  devices, oropharyngeal airways & oxygen supplies, treatment of injuries to bones, muscles &
      joints, assessment & treatment of shock, bleeding, management of the unconscious patient,
      hypothermia, hyperthermia, effects of immersion, poisons encountered offshore, treatment
  dressing & immobilisation of injuries, burns, eye injuries, smoke & hot gas inhalation,
  assessment & treatment of common major & minor illnesses, personal hygiene, universal
  hygiene procedures, patient transport & an understanding of the difficulties of transport by
      helicopter, the management of a patient during flight, stabilisation of a patient before
      transport, safe use of entonox, effective communications in an emergency, record keeping,
